APPENDIX 1. AN ARIEL DORFMAN
CHRONOLOGY
1903
Ariel Dorfman’s maternal great grandfather is murdered in a pogrom in
Kishinev (today the capital of the Republic of Moldova). This death eventually
leads to his grandmother’s family’s decision to emigrate. They choose Argentina
as a consequence of Baron Maurice de Hirsch’s Jewish Colonization Association,
which helped many East European Jews emigrate to Argentina and Brazil.
1907
Adolfo Dorfman is born in Odessa (now in Ukraine).
1909
Fanny Zelicovich Vaisman (Ariel’s mother) is born in Kishinev.
1909
Three-month-old Fanny departs with her parents for Argentina, fleeing
the pogroms.
1911
Adolfo and his mother leave Odessa for Argentina.
1914
Dorfman’s paternal grandmother, Raissa, and his father, Adolfo, return to
Russia and are caught in the eruption of the First World War and the Russian
Revolution.
