All Chinese–English translations are the author’s except in cases where the
work of other translators is cited.
This book uses the Hanyu Pinyin system of transliteration for Chinese words,
names, and phrases, except in cases where a diﬀerent conventional or pre-
ferred spelling or pronunciation exists, as is frequently the case in Taiwan
