This volume is the product of two workshops the editors or ganized and
convened (in 2008 and 2011) at Les Treilles (France). These workshops
were based on research the editors carried out, when Evelyn Fox Keller was
awarded a Chaire Blaise Pascal by the Fondation de l’Ecole Normale Supéri-
eure (2005–2007). The first workshop convinced the participants of the value
of publishing a book based on the papers that had been given. A se lection of
papers were then revised for greater coherence and discussed during the sec-
ond workshop, with recommendations for further revisions. Fi nally, Karine
Chemla’s residency during the summer 2013 at Les Treilles allowed her to
work on the completion of the book. We thank the Fondation des Treilles
for its hospitality in surroundings that were inspirational and for its support
in the preparation of the book. Many thanks to Karen Margolis for her indis-
pensable contribution to the completion of the volume. Part of the research
presented in the book led to the Eu ropean Research Council proj ect saw
(Eu ropean Union’s Seventh Framework Programme [fp7/2007-2013] /
erc grant agreement 269804), for which Chemla is principal investigator,
together with Agathe Keller and Christine Proust. Chemla acknowledges
funding from the proj ect in support of her work on the introduction to the
book. It is a plea sure to express our gratitude to Duke University Press and,
more specifically, to Kenneth Wissoker and his colleagues, Jade Brooks, Ni-
cole Campbell, Heather Hensley, Danielle Houtz, Christine Riggio, and Trish
Watson, for their warm and rigorous support, and also to the two referees
whose thoughtful suggestions have been decisive in improving the book.
