notE on translitEration
Cantonese romanizations in this book generally follow the Yale system but
omit non- alphabetical tone diacritics. Exceptions include: street and place
names, such as “Hong Kong,” which follow government spellings; personal
names, which follow people’s chosen spellings; and excerpts from published
works, which reflect authors’ original spellings. Mandarin romanizations
are in Pinyin.
