THIS BOOK IS GROUNDED IN COMMUNITY. WITHOUT THE MANY PEOPLE
who read the endless drafts; who talked ideas, politics, activism,
philosophy, and poetry with me; who encouraged my work in every
possible way; who took to the streets with me; who stayed with me
through the daily ups and downs; these words would simply not exist.
For seeing me and this book every step of the way, I cannot
thank Joe Kadi enough. Through it all, Su Penn has been a wonder-
ful writing buddy. My MFA advisors at Goddard College, Nora
Mitchell and Jan Clausen, and my high school poetry teacher, Bill
Beckman, led me toward this book. My dog, Jasper, reminded me
over and over again that there is much more to life than my com-
puter keyboard, insisting upon two walks a day and as many frolics
in the woods as possible.
For support and sustenance of many kinds over the years,
thanks to Jan Binder, Susan Cowling, David Dierauer, Kenny Fries,
Aura Glaser, Jessica Collinares, Cheryl Hughes, Joe Kadi, Karen
Kerns, Sarra Levine, Andrea Freud Loewenstein, Anette Marcus,
