This book began to take form at several interrelated panel
discussions on genocide, truth, memory, and representation,
including those held at meetings of the American Anthropo-
logical Association, the Society for Psychological Anthropol-
ogy, and the International Association of Genocide Scholars.
We are grateful to the participants in these sessions and to our
other contributors for being so responsive to our queries and
suggestions and so patient during the review process. In ad
dition, we would like to thank the series editors of The Cultures
and Practice of Violence Series, Neil L. Whitehead, Jo Ellen
Fair, and Leigh Payne, and our editors at Duke University Press,
Valerie Millholland and Miriam Angress. We appreciate their
support for and encouragement about the volume. Last, we are
grateful for the efforts of Molly Balikov, Heather Hensley, and
Petra Dreiser during the production process.
