The idea for this volume initially grew out of discussions on tourism after a
panel organized for a Rocky Mountain Conference for Latin American Stud-
ies (rmclas) meeting in Tempe, Arizona. Broader discussion among the
contributors was realized in later conference settings including the Latin
American Studies Association meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2006.
We would like to thank our contributors for their tireless efforts in writ-
ing and revising their essays. We appreciate their promptness and the qual-
ity of their work, especially by those with other full-time careers (the volume
plays host to essays by a practicing lawyer, renowned journalist, administra-
tive director, and a still relatively new mom!).
We wish to thank Gilbert M. Joseph, who believed in Holiday from the
earliest stages. We also would like to acknowledge Valerie Millholland, Mir-
iam Angress, and Pam Morrison at Duke University Press for their editorial
support, as well as two anonymous readers whose feedback helped make the
collection a better book.
