Peopleof IndianorigininTrinidadareusually
called East Indian or Indo-Trinidadian.When
I refer to the indentured laborers who were
brought to Trinidad from the Indian subcon-
tinent in the nineteenth century, I use the
term Indian. Today this term is reserved for
those who are citizens of the nation-state
called India. When I refer to ethnic Indians in
contemporary Trinidad, I use East Indian or
Indo-Trinidadian. On occasion I also use the
term Trinidad Indians as contrasted with India
Indians.
