The title of Foucault's introduction is particularly important to my concerns in
that it is derived from Steven Marcus's book
The Other Victorians: A Study?fSexuality
and PornoBraphy
in
Mid-Nineteenth-CentuTY EnBland
(New York: Basic Books,
1964).
Marcus's "other Victorians" are, of course, the prostitute, the hysteric, the pimp,
etc. Foucault is interested in the ways in which "those' other Yictorians' . . . seem
to have surreptitiously transferred the pleasures that are unspoken into the order of
things that are counted. Words and gestures, quietly authorized, could be ex-
changed there at the going rate. Only in those places would untrammeled sex have
a right to (safely insularized) forms of reality, and only to clandestine, circum-
scribed, and coded types of discourse. Everywhere else, modern puritanism im-
posed its triple edict of taboo, nonexistence, and silence" (p. 4). Similarly, Fou-
cault imagines our current discourse to be in a similar "insularized" space; our
