Larry Blumenfeld writes regularly about music and culture for the Wall Street
Journal. His work has appeared in the Village Voice, the New York Times, Salon, and
Truthdig, among other publications. This essay grew from his research of post-
flood cultural recovery as a Katrina Media Fellow with the Open Society Institute.
Blumenfeld was also awarded a 2001–2 fellowship in the National Arts Journalism
Program at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He is editor- at-
large of Jazziz magazine, for which he served as editor- in- chief from 1995 to 2000.
He lives in Brooklyn, New York, but heads down to New Orleans whenever possible
(and especially on St. Joseph’s Night).
Austin Bunn’s fiction and nonfiction have appeared in Best American Science and
Nature Writing, The Pushcart Prize Anthology, the New York Times magazine, Zoe-
trope, and elsewhere. He teaches creative writing at Grand Valley State University
in Michigan.
Nate Chinen writes about music for the New York Times. He’s also a columnist
for JazzTimes, an independent music blogger (thegig.typepad.com), and coauthor
of Myself among Others, the autobiography of impresario George Wein. For each of
the last six years, he has received the Helen Dance- Robert Palmer Award for Excel-
lence in Newspaper, Magazine or Online Feature or Review Writing. He was born
and raised in Honolulu.
J. Martin Daughtry is an assistant professor of ethnomusicology in New York
University’s Department of Music. His research projects cover sung poetry in the
post- Stalinist Soviet Union, post- Soviet musical nationalism, and the transforma-
tion, persistence, and attenuation of musical traditions in the wake of cataclysmic
sociopolitical change. In 2007, Music in the Post- 9/11 World, which he coedited with
Jonathan Ritter, was published by Routledge. He is working on a book- length inves-
tigation of the sonic dimensions of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Brian Goedde has written for the New York Times, the New York Times magazine,
and the Chicago Tribune, among other publications. He is also coproducer of Iowa
