Louise Popkin
is a professional translator and a member of the American Translators'
Association and the American literary Translators' Association. She is a lecturer in Spanish
at the Harvard University Division of Continuing Education. Her translations of latin
American prose, poetry, and drama have appeared in literary journals and anthologies. She
is the author of The Theater of Rafael Alberti.
Hugo Achugar
is Professor of latin American literature, Universidad de la Republica,
Montevideo. His recent books of criticism include Poesia y sociedad: Uruguay, 1880-1911
and La biblioteca en ruinas: ensayos sobre literaturals en America Latina. Recent books of

Alvaro Barros-Lemez
is Professor of Journalism, Universidad de la Republica, Montevideo,
and Director, Editorial Monte Sexto. His scholarly works include Abraxas en el pais de las

Viana, and Angel Rama: Bibliograffa general anotada. He has also edited anthologies and
published book-length interviews with major political figures.
