This book was written in dialogue with colleagues in the Departments
of Sociology, Women’s Studies, and Cultural Studies at Lancaster Uni-
versity and at a number of other institutions, particularly the Center
for Women’s Studies at the University of Utrecht, the Center for the
Study of Women and Gender at the University of British Columbia,
and the Department of Communication Studies at Simon Fraser Uni-
versity. I am extremely grateful to Lancaster University for the periods
of research leave which enabled me to complete this work, and to the
Arts and Humanities Research Council (aHRC) for a matching leave
research grant in 2005–6. During 2006 I spent two terms at the Center
for Research in Women’s Studies and Gender Relations at the Univer-
sity of British Columbia and enjoyed the warm hospitality and intellec-
tual stimulation of its staff, visitors, and postgraduates. I am grateful to
Sneja Gunew for her hard work in making this possible, and to Kirsten
McAllister at Simon Fraser University for her facilitation of this period
of leave in Vancouver. In 2007 I moved to the University of Manchester,
and my thanks go to my new colleagues at the Research Institute for
Cosmopolitan Cultures (RICC), at the Centre for the Study of Sexuality
