More books have been published on historic Lima than the contemporary city.
Colonial Lima, second only to Mexico City in terms of size and importance in Spanish
America, attracted the eye of contemporary writers—travelers, scientists, poets, and
chroniclers—and subsequently historians. In recent decades, the nineteenth century
has been the subject of much scholarly debate while archeologists have also excavated
in and around the city. This focus on the past is changing, however, as Lima’s cuisine,
