As with all writing, that this book is in print is down to
more people than can be acknowledged. The project
came first out of a love of narrative and a desire to
play with it: in this ongoing endeavour, David Han-
sen-Miller is always my main partner in crime. It is a
privilege to be surrounded by feminists who generate
hope out of hopelessness, not by turning away from
reality but by grappling with it. Here I simply do not
know how to thank Amal Treacher, Anne Phillips, Fran
Tonkiss, Helen Crowley, Hilary Hinds, Jackie Stacey,
Jane Rowley, Jo Eadie, Kate Nash, Laleh Khalili, Nadje
Al-Ali, Ros Gill, Rosi Braidotti, Ranjana Khanna,
Robyn Wiegman, Rutvica Andrijasevic, Sara Ahmed,
and Tina Campt, whose combined intellectual and
personal connections I cannot do without. Readers of
and responders to my work at key moments kept me
going and persuaded me this was a book worth finish-
ing: particular thanks to Sadie Wearing, Tyler Curtain,
and Vron Ware. Ken Wissoker and all the team at Duke
University Press managed my hysteria beautifully.
Merl Storr was a gift of an indexer.
